On Saturday 11th July 2015, Matthew Harrison and Sally Jones competed in the Race to the Stones alongside their Kilimanjaro team mates.

Matthew and Sally are currently raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support by climbing Kilimanjaro on Wednesday 29th July 2015. The Race to the Stones was part of their training for the gruelling climb.

The Race to the Stones is an ‘ultramarathon’ that takes place along Britain’s oldest footpath – The Ridgeway. The full course is 100km beginning at Lewknor in Oxfordshire and finishing at the Avebury Stone Circle in Wiltshire.

A team of eight competed in the challenge. Although five members opted to complete the half-course as they are not as experienced hikers and felt it a little excessive to try and complete the full 100km, especially with the climb at the end of the month. It took Matthew and Sally under 11 hours from start to finish, whilst the more experienced team mates arrived in Avebury at little over 20 hours after setting off.

It was very challenging and they didn’t come away without a few niggling injuries such as blisters, friction burn and rashes! By the end of the challenge everyone was feeling sick from exhaustion and dehydration but Sally said: “It was a fantastic experience. The support team from the event were fantastic and the food and drink was greatly appreciated and well selected.”
