Fire Extinguishers

CIA Fire & Security supply and service fire extinguishers at both commercial and domestic properties in and around Gloucestershire including: Burford, Cirencester, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Marlborough, Nailsworth, Oxford, Stroud, Swindon, Tetbury, and Witney.

To comply with British standards, currently BS5306, fire extinguishers need to be serviced by a “competent person” annually and have a full discharge test either every 5 or 10 years, depending on the type of extinguisher.

Water

These are good for tackling Class A fires involving burning paper, wood and soft furnishings, as the water soaks into the materials and cools them, extinguishing the fire. This type of extinguisher does not contain harmful chemicals but has a low firefighting rating. Due to this, water fire extinguishers are usually large and heavy to overcome their lack in firefighting power. It is also important to remember that water conducts electricity. Care must therefore be taken with regards to use around exposed power cables.

Foam

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (also called AFFF) extinguishers are used for fighting Class A & B fires, as they create a smothering film of foam over the fire, starving it of oxygen. The foam also penetrates porous materials and cools the fire through evaporation of the water content in the foam. As the foam creates a carpet on burning liquids, like petrol, these extinguishers are also suitable for flammable liquids and areas where man-made fibres in soft furnishings and carpets might liquidise under the influence of heat.

Powder

Suitable for fighting class A, B & C fires, powder extinguishers have a very good firefighting capacity, but the powder does not soak into materials and does not have a good cooling effect on the fire. Care must be taken when using powder extinguishers that you do not inhale the powder. Powder extinguishers should therefore not be used in small, confined spaces where there is a risk of inhalation. In fact, the British Standard no longer allows powder extinguishers in offices and living accommodations.

Wet Chemical

These are designed especially for use on Class F fires involving burning oil and deep fat fryers. These extinguishers come with a special, long application lance which allows you to safely lay a cooling layer of foam on top of the burning oil. They can also be used on Class A fires, although their firefighting power for general risks is not very strong.

CO2

These only contain pressurised CO2 gas and therefore leave no residue. This type of extinguisher is suitable for use on fires involving burning liquids (Class B fires), but is also a good solution for quenching fires involving computer equipment and other electrical appliances, as it does not cause damage to the electrical items and does not cause the system to short circuit. CO2 extinguishers are NOT suitable for deep fat fryers, as the strong jet from the extinguisher will carry the burning fat out of the fryer and into the room.

Our Service Pack:

Certain parts on a fire extinguisher need to be replaced every service. Whilst most of these are relatively small, their replacement cost can add up. In order to keep the cost to you at a minimum, we have included these parts within our Service Pack which covers the following: Pull Tags, Black End Caps, Safety Pins, Pin and Disc, O-ring Seals for Discharge Hose, Stored Pressure Valve and Cartridge Headcaps.

Free-of-charge, no-obligation quotations:

For sites where 10 or fewer extinguishers are present, we can provide an instant quote for a basic annual Service Pack. Any other parts that need replacement will be quoted at the time of service and agreed with the customer prior to the work being completed.

As part of our service whilst onsite, our technician will do a site fire asset audit to confirm that you have the correct level of protection for your premises.

For larger sites, one of our surveyors will visit your site to give you a full quotation including an audit to confirm that you have the correct level of protection for your premises.

We are registered to BAFE SP101 for service/maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.
